What does it cost to charge an EV in Canada in 2026?

Compare defined 2026 home-electricity scenarios across Canada with public Level 2 and fast-charging price structures and transparent per-100-km calculations.

In the ten defined utility scenarios below, an EV using 18 kWh/100 km adds about $1.76 to $3.44 in marginal electricity per 100 km at home. That range is not a promise about a household’s complete bill: rate plans, tiers, delivery, taxes and fixed charges differ.

Direct answer: multiply the vehicle’s kWh/100 km by the applicable cents/kWh and divide by 100. Public fast charging can cost much more, and time-based prices depend heavily on the energy the vehicle actually accepts.

Motorz.ca calculation using a marginal 18 kWh/100 km load. Fixed charges are excluded because an existing household pays them without the EV; taxes are excluded except where the source scenario explicitly includes them. These are utility scenarios, not province-wide household averages.

At 18 kWh/100 km, the same rate scenarios equal roughly $17.60–$34.43 per 1,000 km and $264–$516 for 15,000 km. At 22 kWh/100 km, multiply every result by 1.222. Charging losses are not added; drivers wanting a cautious budget can model 10% more energy.

The Petro-Canada conversion is Motorz.ca’s illustration: $0.50/minute for 30 minutes divided by 40 kWh delivered. Actual speed, taper, temperature and station price change the result.

Methodology and limitations

  • Rates were verified September 10, 2026 and use one explicitly named utility scenario per province.
  • Ontario uses off-peak commodity pricing; Alberta uses the default energy price; delivery and billing charges are excluded.
  • Quebec’s EV example is the second-tier estimate including tax. Other rows generally exclude tax.
  • The Newfoundland and Labrador row is an NL Hydro diesel-service scenario, not an island-wide average.
  • No territorial comparison is presented because the approved scope is provincial and remote-system structures differ substantially.
