Under this standardized model, a 540-km Toronto–Montréal trip costs about $68.23 in an efficient gasoline car, $45.49 in a hybrid and $36.45 in an EV using the modelled fast-charge price. Those are energy costs only—not total ownership or trip costs.

When is the EV cheaper to power? At 18 kWh/100 km and gasoline at $1.755/L, it beats the 4.8-L/100-km hybrid below about $0.468/kWh and the 7.2-L/100-km gasoline car below about $0.702/kWh.

Sensitivity assumptions are illustrative, not a universal Canadian winter penalty. Weather, speed, tires, cabin heat, elevation and charging curves vary.

On the 540-km route, the illustrative adverse-consumption case produces about $78.47 for gasoline, $52.31 for the hybrid and $47.39 for the EV. At $0.60/kWh instead, the EV energy total is $58.32.

What the model does not include

  • Charging stops, route elevation, detours, idling or hotel charging.
  • Purchase price, depreciation, financing, insurance, maintenance or tires.
  • A universal winter penalty; the sensitivity case is illustrative.
  • Real-time navigation distance or station availability.
