What hardware actually matters?
Low range and gearing
A two-speed transfer case multiplies torque at low speed and gives the driver finer control on steep, loose or uneven terrain. AWD can be excellent for winter roads, but it is not automatically a substitute for low range on technical trails.
Locking differentials
A locker can keep paired wheels turning together when one loses traction. Confirm whether the vehicle has a rear locker, front and rear lockers, or only brake-based traction control; marketing names can hide meaningful differences.
Clearance and angles
Ground clearance helps avoid centre impacts, while approach, breakover and departure angles describe where bodywork may contact the terrain. The lowest fixed component—not the most flattering brochure number—should guide real route planning.
Tires
All-terrain tires are usually the practical mixed-use choice. Mud-terrain tires can provide stronger bite in loose surfaces but commonly bring more noise, rolling resistance and winter compromises. A three-peak mountain-snowflake marking is a separate consideration for severe-snow traction.

- Technical trail priority: start with Bronco Badlands/Raptor or Wrangler Rubicon specifications.
- Family and enclosed cargo: compare the 4Runner with four-door Bronco and Wrangler configurations.

Frequently asked questions
Is 4WD better than AWD off road?
For slow technical terrain, a selectable 4WD system with low range is usually more useful than road-oriented AWD. AWD can still be a strong choice for snow, gravel and maintained access roads. Hardware, tires, clearance and driver judgment matter more than the badge alone.
Does a locking differential matter?
It matters when wheel articulation or a loose surface unloads one wheel. A locker can preserve drive across an axle, but it does not improve braking and should be used according to the owner manual.
